It comes as a surprise to many that ‘Aaqa’ [Coke Studio 9] is not Ali Sethi’s debut. The down-to-earth artist have the talents of a hundred and pride of none.

A Harvard graduate, Ali is the author of a novel, The Wish Maker. The novel has received critical appraisal and recognition, it has also been listed in several international top-ten lists, nominated for DSC Prize for South Asian Literature, and the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize Award. Ali Sethi, who is also a columnist has gotten his works published in The New Yorker, The Friday Times, New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Caravan.

2013 was the year he gave music a shot, professionally. He appeared as a playback singer in The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2013). His hit cover “Mohabbat Karne Waley” was released soon after that. The real bombshell was his own version of Reshma’s song “Kithay Nain Na Jorin”. Giving the ballad a modern, even more tragic and soulful feel, Sethi stole the show. Later, a music video was released starring Adnan Siddiqui, Sania Saeed and Mira Sethi, Ali’s sister. Critically acclaimed Pakistani film, Manto (2015) was another experience for Sethi to sing for the big screen. “Kya Hoga” and “Aah Ko Chayie” are the two songs featured in the fil, sung by Sethi. He has appeared twice in Coke Studio (Season 8 and Season 9), with two popular tracks, including one with Abida Parveen called ‘Aaqa’. “Haal Aisa Nahin” “Yaad Mein Teri” and “Dil Jalaane ki Baat Kartey Ho” are some of his other hit covers.

“Mahi Mera” is Ali Sethi’s first original single, which he released this year. Bagging a Lux Style Award nomination as a Best Playback Singer – Male at 15th Lux Style Awards, and nomination for Best Playback Singer – Male at 2nd ARY Film Awards, both for “Aah Ko Chayie”. Ali Sethi’s cover of “Kithay Nain Na Jorin” got him a Hum Award nomination at 4th Hum Awards in Best Music Single.

Recently, Sethi got a chance to sing the OST of ATV’s serial “Yeh Mera Dewaanapan Hay” starring Saima and Junaid Khan.

The singer, writer, and columnist, the man of many talents is a triple threat. And this triple threat is performing in Karachi for the first time ever.
