Music is More than Just a Pretty Face

So how come no one is mentioning Ali Khan’s Janay Na Tu in this season’s episode 1 of Coke Studio? It is a lovely tune, with heart touching lyrics. How come, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab is not lauded for being the rightful torch bearer for Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab’s dynasty? He did justice to the Coke Studio version of Afreen Afreen.

This society is so very dominated by image and looks of a person. Why does the audience think that singers whose talent does not extend beyond their ability to prance on stage or videos and photographs have no place in the music industry? Why has the audience become so accustomed to pretty faces and fashion plates? It is no secret that gorgeous faces sell, which is a tale as old as time itself.

Momina Mustehsan is beautiful; indeed. But the thing is tough, her songwriting talents, her amazing vocal tone, the acoustic covers she does and the all the instruments she is able to play, tend to get really overshadowed by the fact that she is making your heart skip a beat or making your knees wobbly! Don’t you think it is time we put their talent before a singers appealing looks? Being gorgeous in music is one thing, but add talent to the mix? Wow! Now that is taking it to a whole another level; Don’t you agree? So, why does the audience only notice the smile that makes knees wobbly and completely overlooks the fact, that this particular musician is in fact a great singer, and she not only writes a lot of her own music, but probably records some of it at home too?

With this particular song in Coke Studio 9, episode 3, featuring Mehwish Hayat it made me realize that music producers and directors are to be blamed to an extent for mapping out audiences minds and perceptions; sadly they focus on sculpting their pecs in order to be popular.

Why have most music producers reduced music to just pretty faces, stars and to idols looks and likes? Why do music producers believe in gaining viewers attention by casting dreamily smiling female mastery?

All girl band, female solo acts and female fronted music acts becoming more and more commonplace. Girls are stepping out to the front and demanding to be heard . You have to agree with me that 2015 and 2016 have definitely been the year of fierce ladies in music.
To show our appreciation to all the strong females who provide us with satisfying doses of ear candy, PMR thinks’ it is time we champion the idea of placing music before the pretty face of a singer.
