PMR Exclusive Interview: Sachin Gupta – Hard Talk On Soft Chair!

Q: How you started the career from bottom line to Bollywood Music Director?
A:
I was always a guitar player since my childhood. Once I started winning at different music competitions in school, the prize money was my pocket money at that age :-}. Started enjoying the cold drinks in the canteen .and kept practising more guitars. While in college, I joined the famous band “Mrigya” and travelled around the world with them. I met Mr. Rajeev Sogani who at that times was with Tips Music, at one such show in London and he offered me to work at Tips. That was when I shifted to Mumbai and composed “Doorie” and the rest, as they say is history. I have to say God has been very kind to me.

Q: How many artist you worked with? name most easiest and name most annoying singer you ever work with
A:
No singer is annoying. All are artists and i respect and love them all. And I have been fortunate to work with many artists now so that’s surely going to be a long list.

Q: We heard that you are working as actor in a film tell us how did it happend and tell us about ur role in that film
A:
Well I had a meeting for the music of a film with the director Sameer. While we were discussing the music for the film, Sameer suddenly mentioned that he would like me to act in his film and he convinced me that I would be able to do justice to the role, which was for a musician as part of a band. I play the base player in the band who isn’t very well to do and lives with an older woman who is very rich 😉
Rest once the movie is out, we’ll all know 🙂

Q: You always have been ignored over here in Pakistan`s Media, what you will say on it?
A
: Well all I have to say is that I have got my due, if not much than almost. But it’s never too late and may be now I’ll get the rest of it. I would just ask the media to respect everyone and little more attention towards the Music Composers 🙂

Q: Since Pak-Indo relation is not good and some Indian musician are quite against of Pakistani singer, what do u have to say about this issue?
A:
Each individual means a different mind, different values and different believes so I wouldn’t want to say much on this.

Q: Tell us about your previous band Mrigya & do you have any band now?
A:
Mrigya is a world fusion band which has a lot of Indian elements. We used to do a lot of shows where each individual instrument player in the band got an opportunity to express themselves as well. It was all very soulful and contemporary.
No i don’t have a band right now. After leaving Mrigya I was more into creating music so was in my studio but I may announce a band soon.

Q: How was your experience of working with Atif Aslam from Doorie to Prince?
A:
Well it has all been really nice. He’s got a very soulful, very different voice and adds a lot to the music. He’s a very humble person and a dear friend of mine as we have been associated for a very long time now.

Q: What is the basic requirement tips have to sign a new artist from Pakistan? Is artist have to be stable in Pakistan or you can take from Underground music industry of Pakistan?
A:
Anything that is good, fresh and new. Kumar Taurani is always on the look out for something new and will always promote that. That’s all it takes.

Q: First of all we want to say thank you for listening our voice on Tere Liye having Quranic verses and removing those Ayats(verses) but still loads of people havent heard you on this issue so we want to say few words on it.
A:
Well everything is sorted now. We at tips understand the feelings of the people and didn`t want to disrespect anything, so the verses have been removed from the song. Kumarji called back all the CDs that had been dispatched for distribution and a new master has been created,
All i want to say is that it was my way of expressing my gratitude to the Almighty and i really thought it was a beautiful verse so used it. For me God is and will always be one. I respect all religions and realised that I had unknowingly and unintentionally hurt the sentiments of my muslim friends and thus i apologised and removed the verses immediately.
Atif Aslam or anyone else had nothing to do with this. It was my feeling and sentiments but it just got misrepresented by me. Rest everything is in order now and i do want to thank the Pak Media Revolution team and others who helped us by bringing this to our knowledge and supporting us till now.

Q: How do you see the internet market for upcoming/underground bands in terms of marketing tool and what do u expect?
A:
Well it’s really good. See to reach the moon one will always have to take the space shuttle, a boat won’t do. Similarly, to reach the masses in this new tech age, the internet is an awesome medium.

Q: Would you like to say something to your co-artists and any message for our underground musicians ?
A:
Keep rocking… always follow you heat and the rest all will fall in place.

Q: Few words about ‘Pak Media Revolution’ and for its team ?
A:
Must say, you all are one of the most supportive people who are true to their work. All are Rockstars 😉
